Eastern Kentucky University Transfer Student

 Alexandra "Allie" Fowee

Awarded $ 3,000.00

National Tau Sigma Scholarship

Alexandra “Allie” Fowee is from Cincinnati, Ohio. She will be graduating from Eastern Kentucky University with a 4.0 GPA in May. Upon receiving bachelor’s degrees in both American Sign Language and English Interpretation, and Deaf Studies, she hopes to pursue a career as an interpreter. Enrolling in an ASL class her sophomore year of college, Ms. Fowee fell in love with the language and culture of the Deaf. As her passion grew, she decided to transfer to EKU for their accredited Interpreter Training Program. Transferring to a larger institution as a third-year student was not easy, but Allie found support in the organizations and extracurricular activities she involved herself in, such as the American Sign Language Association and the Golden Key International Honor Society. Among this involvement was the Tau Sigma National Honor Society. Tau Sigma is unique, because every member shares a similar experience as a transfer student. During her first year as a member, Ms. Fowee was elected treasurer of EKU’s chapter. The following year, she became president. With a background in leadership, marketing, and academics, Allie focused on recruiting new members through social media and events. Her attendance at the Tau Sigma National Conference in Washington, D.C. provided additional guidance during her presidency. Currently, Ms. Fowee is apprenticing as a sign language interpreter for the National Technical Institute for the Deaf’s Department of Access Services at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. Allie is extremely excited to be working at the internship of her dreams. She is grateful to Tau Sigma for their support, especially through the scholarship she received. By being awarded a $3,000 scholarship from the Tau Sigma National Honor Society, Ms. Fowee was given the opportunity to continue following her passion for interpreting and being an ally to the culturally rich and diverse Deaf community.

Tau Sigma National Honor Society is a national honor society designed exclusively for transfer students!  Our mission is to "recognize and promote the academic excellence and involvement of transfer students."  Tau Sigma provides its members opportunities to earn scholarships, attend leadership conferences, take leadership positions in the university, serve others at the university and in the community, all while developing friendships and becoming a more integral part of the university to which they transferred! Students who transfer to EKU will be invited to join after their first semester at EKU if they meet the requirements.
